Neves, perched on the northwestern coast of São Tomé Island in São Tomé and Príncipe, is the vibrant capital of the Lembá district. With a population of around 10,000 inhabitants, the town is predominantly home to Angolares, a community that enriches the cultural fabric of the area. Crossing through Neves are two rivers, adding to its picturesque landscape and significance as a geographical hub.

A Vital Harbour

One of the most notable features of Neves is its strategic harbour, which serves as the primary entry point for the island's fuel supplies arriving by ship from Angola. As you approach town from the east, the sight of expansive storage tanks stands out, indicating the harbour's importance in sustaining the local economy. The harbour is not only vital for fuel but also supports the fishing and transportation sectors, enhancing trade links within the region.

Industrial Development: The Rosema Brewery

In a country with limited industrial facilities, the Rosema brewery stands out as a key establishment in Neves. Located at the eastern end of the town, the brewery produces Nacional beer, a local favorite enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. The brewery employs approximately 200 people, contributing significantly to the local economy. National beer is typically sold in large, unlabelled brown bottles, a common sight among the locals. Despite its involvement in a controversial ownership dispute, the brewery has remained a staple for the community, providing jobs and a popular product.

The Shipyard and Joint Development Zone

Also significant to Neves is the shipyard located at Rosema pier, which provides a safe landing area for boat trips along the scenic west coast of the island. This facility is crucial for the fishing industry and for transporting goods to and from the mainland. As part of a Joint Development Zone established in collaboration with Nigeria, Neves has witnessed the construction of a deep-water port. This port, completed in 2012, features a 400-meter jetty that can accommodate two Panamax-sized vessels at a depth of 20 meters. The joint venture represents a significant investment in the region, enabling better access to maritime routes and enhancing trade potential.

Natural Beauty and Outdoor Activities

Beyond its industrial significance, Neves is also surrounded by stunning landscapes. The green, grassy hills that rise above the town are excellent for trekking, particularly given the semi-arid climate, which allows for hot but dry conditions. Winter offers an added attraction for birdwatching, as the area becomes a prime location for observing savannah birds. A popular starting point for trekking excursions is Roça Ponta Figo, where adventurers can enjoy breathtaking early morning views of Pico de São Tomé while crossing the Contador River.
